Molbio Diagnostics IPO: What We Know So Far, Before Any Price Band Has Been Set

Quick Answer

Molbio Diagnostics, the company behind the widely used Truenat point-of-care molecular testing platform, has filed its draft paperwork for an IPO but hasn't yet announced a price band, opening date, or lot size. This is too early to say whether the IPO will be worth applying for, since there's no price to judge value against yet, but the underlying business and financials are genuinely worth knowing about ahead of time: a company that's tripled revenue in two years and swung from a loss to over Rs 138 crore in profit, backed by Temasek and Motilal Oswal Private Equity, in a diagnostics niche it says has no directly comparable listed peer.

What Does Molbio Diagnostics Ltd Do?

Picture a rural health clinic without a full diagnostic laboratory, needing to test a patient for tuberculosis and get a reliable answer the same day. That's the exact problem Molbio Diagnostics built its business around. You can track this and other IPO GMP data on the IPO GMP Live homepage.

Founded in Goa in 2000, the company's core product is Truenat, a portable, battery-operated molecular testing system built from two devices, the Trueprep extraction unit and the Truelab analyzer, that together deliver PCR-quality diagnostic results in about an hour, without needing a traditional lab setup. As of March 2025, the platform was patented in over 100 countries and could test for 30 different diseases, including tuberculosis, COVID-19, Hepatitis B and C, HIV, and HPV, across 42 distinct test types. The commercial model is a classic razor-and-blade setup: once a hospital or clinic buys a Truelab device, they need to keep buying Molbio's own proprietary test cartridges to actually run it, which supports a recurring revenue stream well beyond the initial hardware sale. The company describes its market as oligopolistic with real barriers to entry, and says there's no directly comparable listed company, in India or globally, doing quite the same thing at a similar scale.

How Strong Are the Financials?

This is a genuinely striking growth and profitability story. Revenue moved from Rs 337 crore in FY23 to Rs 841 crore in FY24 to Rs 1,028 crore in FY25, more than tripling over two years. Profitability improved even more sharply, a net loss of Rs 3.45 crore in FY23 flipped to a profit of Rs 83.54 crore in FY24 and then Rs 138.58 crore in FY25, a genuine, sustained turnaround rather than a one-off swing. EBITDA followed the same upward path, more than quintupling from Rs 48.11 crore to Rs 256.64 crore across those three years. Whatever the eventual IPO pricing turns out to be, the underlying growth trajectory here is one of the stronger ones seen among companies heading toward an Indian listing recently.

What Would the IPO Money Be Used For?

Based on the DRHP as filed, the largest planned allocation, Rs 118.08 crore, would go toward building out R&D infrastructure, including a dedicated Center of Excellence and connected office space, reportedly planned for Bengaluru. A further Rs 79.04 crore is earmarked for plant, machinery, and equipment across the company's existing Goa and Visakhapatnam manufacturing units, expanding production capacity for its core Truenat products. The remainder would go to general corporate purposes. Separately, the company has talked about continuing to grow inorganically through acquisitions and partnerships, including a startup engagement programme it calls EDGE, having already made prior acquisitions in radiology and digital pathology, suggesting an ambition to build a broader diagnostics and healthtech platform over time rather than staying purely focused on the Truenat product line.

What to Watch For Once Pricing Is Announced

Since there's no price band yet, it's too early to give a should-you-apply verdict in the usual sense, that will depend heavily on where the company and its bankers ultimately decide to price the issue relative to this growth and profit trajectory. A few things worth watching once that information becomes available: how the market values a company with genuinely few direct listed comparables (which cuts both ways, it can command a premium for uniqueness, or make fair valuation harder to judge); whether the fresh issue size ends up closer to the Rs 200 crore figure most sources currently cite or something larger; and how much of the roughly 1.26 crore Offer for Sale shares existing investors, including Temasek and Motilal Oswal Private Equity, choose to sell down, which will say something about how those sophisticated early backers view the current valuation opportunity.
